The Genealogical Society Gladstone District Inc. held its first meeting on 15 February 1984 with about 30 members. One of the aims of the Society is to collect and preserve the collection of local historical records for the district. Over the twenty six years the Society has been in operation members have been indexing records to ensure the heritage of the local pioneer families that settled in the Post Curtis district is preserved. From this indexing the Society has created the Gladstone District Historical Database.
In the Database are records from the various cemeteries in the area including the Lone Grave Register. All school admission records in the district from 1861 to 1986, Land Valuations for 1878, birth, death and marriage notices from the local paper and Gladstone district pioneer records are amongst the many indexes with the Datebase.
The Library is well stocked with material that covers many aspects of genealogy research which includes England, Ireland, Europe and New Zealand. There are many books and CDs covering all states of Australia available within the Library, such as Police and Government Gazette for New South Wales and Queensland as well as Convict Rescords and Electoral Rolls.
Genealogical Society Gladstone District Inc has recently achieved the status of Affiliate Library from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. All members of GSGD Inc can order in films from FamilySearch Family History Library Catalog to view at our Resource Centre. Short-term Microfilm Loans cost $7.75 AUD from FamilySearch (order online) and are for a period of 60 days.
GSGD has recently received a grant from QGC (Queensland Gas Corporation) to purchase new computer and printer equipment and a Scanpro 2000 Microfilm Reader. This will be a valuable asset which will be used to view and print from LDS films ordered by members. This complements the bank of networked computers and printers which access CD Roms and databases, and the printed resources in the Library.
