The organisation's primary aim is to encourage the public to learn about genealogy research and also to preserve their ancestral history and heritage for future generations.  Our facility is housed in a heritage listed building, occupying the entire ground floor of Maryborough Heritage Centre in Maryborough's Wharf St. precinct. It is one of the city's main tourist attraction.  We have a wide collection of Immigration displays that can be viewed free of charge and an extensive library. Donations of $2.00 and over to MFHI Library Fund are tax deductible.  MFHI has published a series of books on Immigration Ships to Maryborough between 1850-1905 which is an ongoing project.

Although our organisation mainly covers the Wide Bay area we are accessible internationally through our website and emails. Ancestry.com is accessible at the Institute.  Our research facility covers local, national and international records available in person, by mail or through email.

We are a FamilySearch Centre for the LDS with access to their world wide microfiche and microfilm collections.

MFHI holds one of the largest collections of genealogical records in Queensland, BDMs and Immigration records for all Australian States. We are a repository for Family Trees and Local and Oral Histories.

The Institute also houses part of the Maryborough Hospital Museum. Entry is by gold coin donation.
