Yarra Plenty Regional Library operates library services for the Cities of Banyule, Whittlesea and the Shire of Nillumbik in Melbourne's north.
In 1965 the Heidelberg Regional Library Service was formed. In 1985, the name changed to Yarra Plenty Regional Library to reflect the wide area we serve which at that time included the municipalitues of Eltham, Heidelberg, Diamond Valley and Whittlesea.
Local history collections encompass the past and present municipal boundaries in the Region. Collections are held at Ivanhoe, Eltham, Diamond Valley and Mill Park Libraries. Items include books, documents, local government reports, environmental studies, oral histories and more.
Featured collections include early settlers, local organsiations, Alan Marshall collection, 1956 Olympic Games, The Heidelberg School, Heidelberg urban development, including the Walter Burley Griffin estate and houses, early farming, multicultural communities and the Yan Yean Reservoir. Items can only be accessed in the library. Popular and recent titles also have circulating copies.
A growing collection of historical images can accessed via our website. All images have been catalogued.
Local newspapers and Council minutes are available in the local hsitory collections. Including historical newspapers "Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle", "Evelyn Observor" and "Heidleberg News"
Information sessions and speakers regularly present topics of interest on local history and genealogy. Program are listed on our website. The library participates in member council programs, celebrates Family History month in August and Local History Month in November.
Genealogy collections, including microfiche and networked Cd-roms are available at Ivanhoe, Diamond Valley and Mill Park Libraries. Victorian historical records (BDMs) are networked and available at every Branch Library. Some resources are available for loan.
Ancestry Library Edition, Times Digital Archives and other British newspaper digital archvies can be accessed via our website. Ancestry can be accessed in-house only (on every PC in every branch library via the website). This restriction is due to licensing conditions.
