Barbara Toohey will give a brief history of Murray River paddlesteamers and will feature the PS Enterprise and her great grandfather, Captain John Clement Newman.
Barbara tells of the challenges and hardships of a commercial river boat captain, drawing on the stories of her ancestor. This presentation gives an interesting and sometimes surprising insight into a life style that was so important to our forebears but that has almost entirely disappeared.
Barbara has been doing family history research for about 15 years with a strong emphasis on early Australian records as well as interests in English, Scottish, Irish, Dutch and German branches of her family. She has a keen interest in photos and charts.
Visitors welcome.
