Lost in Flanders (Documentary) follows two young Australian historians, Michael Molkentin and Mat McLachlan, who explore the battlefields of the Western Front, joining an archaeological excavation of the trenches and fields where over 20,000 Australians went missing, their bodies lost, their graves unmarked.
While the dig is unsuccessful, by chance local workers who are laying a gas pipe uncover the bodies of five Australian soldiers. Mat and Michael become involved in an intriquing quest to identify these soldiers, bringing military history and science together.
Through DNA testing and research, two of the soldiers are ultimately identified and Mat and Michael meet their descendants, learning their stories and discovering more about the cost of Australia’s involvement in the war before the men are finally laid to rest in graves marked with their names.
