Join Paul Delprat for an entertaining and colourful evening exploring the history of Australian painting.

European and early colonial artists initially struggled to represent our country on canvas, however by the 1890s artists such Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts were attempting to recreate a truer sense of Australian light and colour – and being roundly criticised for the results. Julian Ashton, founder of the Julian Ashton Art School, became the leader in the battle for recognition of this new, truly Australian art.

Over the years, many of Australia’s most respected artists have studied at the Julian Ashton Art School – from George Lambert, Thea Proctor and William Dobell to Max Dupain, John Olsen and Brett Whiteley – and there are many, many more.

Using a selection of these celebrated artists as examples, and with many an entertaining anecdote, Paul Delprat will discuss how Australian painting has developed its own unique language over the years.
