The Maps collection at the National Library of Australia includes more than 600,000 maps, from early European charts to current mapping of Australia, in print and digital form.

Why use maps? A map gives a sense of location to a family history, more than just where things happens, it shows the landscape your family had their history in, a sense of place to a family story. Maps show a time perspective, including changes to a place over time and changes in the interpretation of the landscape. Maps show a social perspective, sometimes they show the human use of a place, depicted by place names, how the land was divided, occupied, and put to use. Maps can answer questions.

In this free session, learn how to make the most of the Library’s unique Maps Collection for your family history research.
