Edwardian comic novelist E.F. Benson’s obsessed fans have included Nancy Mitford, WH Auden, Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence who famously collectively placed an advertisement in the Times in the 1940s offering to ‘pay anything for Lucia books.’

The Lucia novels are Benson’s most celebrated creations. Set among the overly-genteel but constantly impoverished upper-middle-classes in small-town Southern England, the six books feature the monstrous Lucia, a provincial snob, and her plump foil and sworn best enemy Miss Mapp.

To celebrate the Benson’s 150th birthday, Walter Mason will discuss his writing, his life and the reasons behind his small but enduring cult following.
