Museum staff began the research for this exhibition by interviewing South Australians in Rundle Mall. They asked ‘What factors contribute to your identity?’ and ‘How important is being South Australian to you?’

The answers they received became the general themes of this exhibition. South Australians thought the important factors were place, family, cultural heritage, membership of special groups and generational differences. We added in class and education. Would you agree that some or all of these factors contribute to your sense of who you are? Do you think we have missed something?

28 December 2011 marks 175 years since the arrival of officials and immigrants to establish South Australia as a province of the United Kingdom. So we thought we would add ‘now’ to the end of the question ‘Who are we?’ and take a few glances backwards to see how South Australians have changed since 1836.

And will we be very different from who we are now in the year 2036?
