Alan Phillips

Alan has been a publisher and reseller of a wide range of historical and genealogical resources since 1976, trading now as Gould Genealogy & History, with an 11,000 product catalogue.

Gould Genealogy brought leading publishers from the UK and US to Australia in 2003 for a national roadshow to 6 cities around the country. One result was the establishment of Archive Digital Books Australia, part of an international network of Archive CD Books publishers in 6 countries working with societies, libraries and other institutions and individuals to bring a wide range of historical resources to researchers, societies and libraries.

Archive Digital Books Australasia has (at Jan 2010) over 1600 Australian and NZ products and is publishing now at a rate of about 500 new products each year. In addition, more than 2000 products from overseas Archive CD Books partners in Britain Ireland, Canada and the US are locally produced and distributed. Government and Police Gazettes have become the flagship projects of Archive Digital Books Australasia. Alan has spoken widely around Australia on the value and use of gazettes.

Some recent ventures include

  • making digital content widely available. Initially this is through a partnership with World Vital Records Australasia, but other partners are under consideration.
  • establishing Unlock the Past to promote history and genealogy in Australia and New Zealand
  • establishing Family Photo Book an easy, fun way to present your photos and research

Alan has been an active local and family historian since 1971, and was founder of the Torrens Valley and District Historical Society and Gumeracha Local History Centre in the Adelaide Hills. He has co-authored and published 6 books and booklets and established family associations and newsletters on the Randell, Hannaford and Kelly families who all came to South Australia in the period 1837-1840
